Influencing Change

Sometimes the use of a fiction story can help people realize things. Just from reading a novel you can make a change in society. A novel I have read that I think really influenced change in our world today is, To Kill A Mockingbird. It deals with the issues of racism not only throughout the town but also in the courthouse. Also it deals with putting yourself in other people’s shoes.

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, a big issue that is dealt with is racism especially in throughout the town of Maycomb in the book. Racism was out of control during the time of the novel was written. It shows how throughout the town, the people would not black people be educated, they were forced to go to different churches, some black people worked as domestic servants or had poorly paid jobs. Black people were treated like dirt on the bottom of a white person’s shoe. Honestly the worst of it all was that if a black person was sent to court for doing something to a white person and it was false chances were that the court would find the black person guilty over the white person.

Before Tom Robinson’s trial who is the black person in the novel there is a lot of racism towards the blacks. Whites are given more rights than the blacks because they can get successful jobs and can make black people’s lives misery by lying in court under oath about serious matters which can end up getting the black person killed. In this novel Tom Robinson is pleaded guilty even though his lawyer Atticus found strong evidence to show that he is innocent. Tom was pleaded guilty because it was a black man’s word over a white mans and in that day blacks weren’t believed of anything they said. After the trial racism still existed but not as much. We are lucky that in today’s society racism isn’t as bad as it was and that black and white people both have equal rights. But not only does this novel show how poorly black people were treated it also showed how poorly certain white people were too like the character Boo Radley.

Sometimes you have to put yourself in other people’s shoes and learn to walk around in them says character Atticus Finch in To KIll A Mockingbird. The character Boo Radley also came from a very prejudice and unfair judgment background like Tom. Boo Radley was a man who was never seen out of his house. Since the people of the town saw that he was different than them they thought he was bad. Boo had no chance to stand up for himself because he always stayed inside. Like Tom Robinson, Boo Radley is characterized by what the people of Maycomb county say about him. After many years of thinking Boo Radley as a scary bad person characters Jem and Scout come to realization how nice and thoughtful he really is when he saves Scout’s life. The lesson they learned that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover like they judged Boo before they really got to know him. This situation really influenced change on society today on how we see other people in the world.

As you can see, the book To Kill A Mockingbird had a pretty big impact on today’s society. It’s funny how one fiction novel can change the way people in the world act and make them come to realization that nobody’s perfect even themselves.

A Christmas Story

Once upon a time there was 2 young 10 year old children named Jack and Julie who were twins and they loved Christmas. It is the most wonderful time of the year they say! Jack and Julie were so excited for christmas this year. They love to laugh and spend time with family especially around the holidays. They told Santa at the mall they wanted this christmas to be the best Christmas ever.

It was December 24th, Christmas Eve. Jack and Julie were all snug in their beds. Suddenly Santa had arrived, this year Santa wanted to make Jack and Julie’s Christmas extra special. He left Jack and Julie a scavenger hunt to find their presents. He left them clues around the house for them to search for their presents.

It was finally December 25th, Christmas morning. Jack and Julie were up at 6:00am racing each other to the living room to open their presents and they were pretty disappointed when they noticed there wasn’t any presents under the tree for them to open. But then they realized that Santa left them a note telling them about the scavenger hunt and then they took the clues and were off!

Each clue had their name written on it for whose present was hidden. It also described where the present was hidden and gave hints where to find it. They were running all throughout the house full of laughter and cheer, they found presents in every corner they looked. The twins never want the fun to end. They have been searching for a long time and they were both on their last clue. Jack and Julie were both hoping their last clue was the present they wanted the most. Julie wanted the a barbie doll and Jack wanted a new remote control car. They looked everywhere and this clue was so hard they looked up and down throughout the house and finally they both found their favourite Christmas present sitting in behind the Christmas tree.

A couple hours later they were finally done finding all their Christmas presents. Jack and Julie told their mother that it was the best Christmas yet and they couldn’t wait to see what Santa would come up with next year! Merry Christmas!

The Trade Off

If I could trade places with any character from a fiction (literature or film) I would choose Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl. Reasons why I would choose to trade places with Blair would be because I love the show Gossip Girl and Blair is my favourite character but also because she seems to live such an awesome life. I would love to live her life for a day because she is very smart, has the best wardrobe ever and has the best maid ever Dorota. Also Blair is so pretty and plus she is rich, she basically gets whatever she wants.

Blair Waldorf is the most glamourous girls out there. She has the best style of clothing considering her mother owns a fashion line. Blair has the biggest wardrobe ever with the most fabulous clothes, I would love to have her closet even just for a day, I would wear every outfit in it. She is filthy rich she could go out and buy literally whatever she wanted, she buys stuff in a day that I would take years to save up for. I wish I could get whatever I wanted and have a maid to do everything for me like Blair does.

Dorota is Blair’s maid and basically best friend other than Serena. Dorota is my second favourite character she is hilarious and always knows what to say. She won’t let Blair push her around either. Dorota has the best personality she is super nice and funny but when you make her mad watch out because she can get scary. She is not like no regular maid she is pretty much family to Blair, She gives the best life lessons. Dorota often has to give Blair advice on boys especially Chuck Bass.

Chuck Bass is my favourite male character in Gossip Girl he is very handsome and just as popular as blair. He doesn’t have the best personality but always seems to know what to say. He is a strong and independent man who goes through a lot. I would like to be Blair Waldorf just to spend one day with Chuck Bass.

I would love to live the wonderful life of Blair Waldorf for at least a day for the reasons I have stated. She honestly lives the most glamorous and fantastic life ever I would die to trade places with her!

Time Capsule

If our community decided to store a Time Capsule that would be open 100 years from now, 5 items I would like to put in it would be:
  1. The latest iPhone
  2. Pictures of our school
  3. A picture of myself
  4. The latest vehicle
  5. The latest style of clothing

The latest iPhone:
I think the first item I would put in the time capsule would be the latest iPhone so people in the future can see what technology was like in our day. The latest iPhone today is the iPhone SE. In my opinion obviously technology is going to upgrade in the future especially in 100 years from now. Technology in 100 years will be totally different then it is now and people in the future would probably be amazed to see how much technology has changed. I would also leave a phone charger with the phone so maybe someone could charge it up and learn how to use it and they could keep it.

Pictures of our School:
I think that the second item, I would put in would be pictures of our school. I think I’d include this because eventually in the future there will be a different school around here or our school will keep renovating over the years. I think that people in the future would like to see what school was like for us and see how much school has advanced since our day.

A picture of myself:
The third item I would include would be a picture of myself because I would want people to know what I looked like and maybe how people looked around here. Such as  how they dressed and did their hair and make-up. I would also want people to know a little about myself too. In my picture of myself I would include a vision of my house in the background and a few of our everyday items.

The latest Vehicle:
My fourth item I would put in would be pictures of the latest vehicle of 2016. I would put this in the time capsule because new vehicles are being invented everyday. I can only imagine what kind of cars they will have in 100 years from now. I think people in the future would be interested to see what vehicles were like in our day. We think we have some pretty high-tech vehicles right now considering the latest car that has wifi in it. But people in the future 100 years from now will probably think that vehicles in our day were nothing compared to theirs.

The latest style of clothing:
The last item I would like to include would be one of the latest pieces of clothing in 2016. This item would be very interesting for people in the future especially girls because fashion is would of girls’ favourite things. The style of clothing would be so much different in 100 years. Thinking back to just few years ago I realized how much the style of clothing has changed. I would probably leave a womens t-shirt of mine and maybe someone in the future who is my size could fit into it and try to bring back our style of fashion.

Dear people of the future,

My name is Jaime. I am 15 years old and you will receive my letter in about 100 years and I will be 115 and most likely be dead.  I live in  the village of Blackville along with my awesome family. I have two brothers my older one being Jansen and my youngest one being Jaden. I also have two wonderful parents who make my life complete, my mother Diana and my father Scott. My favourite thing to do is play sports and hangout with my friends who live around my community. In this letter I am writing to you I would like to inform you on things happening today in our community as of 2016.

Recently in our generation, on  April 21st 2016 the Queen Elizabeth of England turned 90 years old. Many people celebrated and it was a great mark in history. Something else that has recently occurred would be how Isis attacked Europe. It was quite scary considering it happened pretty close to us. In good news, I think the future generations would find it important to know how in demand the children of the of past generations were. The intelligence of our decade skyrocketed once more children were interested in technology and their future lifestyles. Though the technology and knowledge must have increased within the hundred years I still find it important to capture how the children of our decade were so informed with knowledge. I believe what is happening in the world today will be greatly marked in history in the future. The future generations that gain information on today's society will learn that there were not only positive influences on our world. There were explosions, bombs, and also many new drugs were introduced causing drug addiction and causes of drug overdose.

Our generation made many memories and had many historical events. I wish that I could eventually know what life will be like in 100 years from now. I would love to see you guys open our time capsule and listen to your thoughts and opinions on what the life I live today is like.

Sincerely,
           Jaime

Writing your own Children Story (Cathy's Crazy Adventure)

Cathy’s Crazy Adventure

On a nice warm afternoon Cathy the caterpillar got a phone call from her friend Chloe the caterpillar. Chloe said “Hey Cathy! Want to meet me at the giant Tricky Oak tree to play with the other caterpillars?” Cathy shouted with excitement “Of course Chloe! I will see you there soon!”

Suddenly as Cathy was squirming down the path to meet up with her friends she could hear THUMP THUMP THUMP!! A human was coming behind her running. “Oh no!” Cathy roared I am going to get trampled by this human!

Next thing you know  Brittany the butterfly came dashing in and picked up Cathy and flew away with her. Cathy cried “Thanks so much Brittany that human almost killed me!” Brittany said “No trouble Cathy just make sure you travel more carefully next time!”

After Brittany dropped Cathy off at the tree Cathy told her friends what had happened.

“I can’t wait to become a butterfly so I can fly” said Cathy to her friends. Her friends agreed they hated being caterpillars they think it is too scary and dangerous.

After that, Cathy, Chloe and their friends traveled and played in the tree. They were laughing and having a wonderful time!

Cathy made it back home without seeing any humans along the way. Once she got home she said “phew that was a scary but exciting day I am so tired!” and she peacefully went to bed.

Tips on writing children stories

The information I found particularly helpful was the information about having dialogue. I did not realize how important dialogue could be, I thought it was just a good adder some writers use. Dialogue can be used to help explain a situation and I probably wouldn't have thought to use dialogue if I didn't read this tip. Some information that is similar to what I wrote in my previous blog is the importance of dialogue. If I had done this before, I probably wouldn't have used this excellent technique. I found the examples they put in the article helped a lot with explaining how to use dialogue properly and also showing how enthusiasm can make something sound a lot better. I think being graded on how unique the story is should be a part of the rubric because children stories should be how imaginable and interesting so it can keep their attention.

Analyzing Children Stories

The first children story I read was "The Farm Animals." The main character(s) in this story is the farm animals. There isn't any dialogue in the story because farm animals usually don't talk but their is a narrator who reads the story. The narrator helps describe the story and bring feeling and more imagination to the story. There wasn't necessarily a conflict. The story was just describing the farm animals and what they do and the sounds they make.

Another children story I read was "Pirates Treasure." The main character in this story was the little boy named Jimmy. He is a young boy with blonde hair who was dreaming about a pirate and treasure in his back yard. There is dialogue in his dream where the pirate is telling him where the treasure is in his backyard. This dialogue helps describe the story because there is also a narrator who is reading the story and you can hear the pirates voice in the story which brings the story to life. The conflict in this story is when Jimmy didn't find any treasure only his dog Woofy's bone. I think young children could understand the conflict because they would be upset when they're reading along and find out there is no treasure. The conflict is resolved when Jimmy's mom gives him $5 for digging the whole because she wanted to plant something there, The message/lesson would be to believe in what you dream at night because they may come true.

The third children story I read was "The Bitaba Bird." The main character of this story was the Bitaba Bird which is a fake bird that flies around the sky. There isn't any dialogue in this story but once again there was a narrator who brought the story more to life and helped you imagine the story happening. The conflict would be how there was a bad lighting storm that was scary. It had a good ending though because more Bitaba Birds were hatched. I don't really think children would understand this conflict because they probably wouldn't even realize it was a conflict because the birds were hatching. This story was a good learning story because it gives good information on the Bitaba Bird even though it isn't real.

These 3 stories weren't very similar. "The Farm Animals" story and "The Bitaba Bird" story were kind of similar because they're both referring to animals. These 3 stories are different because they all have a different theme and message. They are all very good entertaining children stories.

These 3 stories are appealing to young children because they are interesting, entertaining and imaginable. "The Farm Animals" story is educational because it helps children learn their animal sounds and about the animals.

How To Make Cupcakes (review)

The main characteristic of making a how-to article is selecting your topic and title. You want to be able to catch your readers attention. You also have to make sure you are clear and specific when telling how to do what you're doing. Also you should include pictures to add more detail and for the reader to understand more of what you are doing. This article on how to make cupcakes was very eye catching and seemed easy to understand and make. This article was very clear on each step you had to do and explained each step very well. This article added a couple pictures and some videos to show you what to do which made the procedure more clear and easier to do. I found that this how-to article was very strong and clear, was not weak at all. If I were to make these cupcakes I am sure I could accomplish it because the procedure is easy to follow.

Here is a link to the article in case you are baking cupcakes sometime soon: http://dish.allrecipes.com/how-to-make-cupcakes/

If I were to rate this article out of 20, I would give it a 20/20 because it is very specific and easy to follow.

Something I would like to add to the rubric would be if the article includes pictures used to help explain whats happening in the how to article.

Film Review Finding Foresster

The movie I am reviewing is "Finding Foresster." It’s weird how a city boy can have so much in common with an old man, in this movie you will see and understand their great bond. I think that an audience that would enjoy this film most would be teenagers or adults because they would have a better understanding of the film. Quotations from the film I really liked would be “We walk away from our dreams afraid that we may fail or worst yet: afraid we may succeed.” I liked this quote because it is very significant to the theme of the movie. Another quote would be “Write your draft with your heart and re-write with your head.” I like this quote mainly because it is inspirational.

This film was produced in 2000, by the production company Columbia Pictures. Main actors are Sean Connery and Rob Brown. In this film 16 year old high school boy Jamal who is black is a very intelligent writer trying to fit in. He gets offered to a private school but can’t really afford it due to his father leaving, him and his mother. He gets his acceptance from basketball and he finds a man interested in his writing. He breaks into an old man’s house who is known as “The Window” as a dare and reads his journals. He finds out that “The Window” is the author of the book Foresster. His teacher Mr Crawford tends to give him a hard time, maybe because he is a failed writer.

I think this movie is similar to "To Kill A Mockingbird" because William Foresster is similar to Boo Radley he stays locked up in his house and never comes out. A lot of people think William is scary grumpy but really he is harmless man just like Boo Radley. The actors in the film Finding Foresster made the movie more enjoyable. It seemed so real, the movie would definitely would not be as good as it is without the actors because they fit their roll so greatly. Jamal Wallace and William Foresster are the main character and they are complete opposites yet they have an amazing bond no one will understand. William Foresster is an old man who is known as “The Window” and he has disconnected himself from society and stays locked up in his appartment. Jamal enjoys visiting William and comes back even though he is told not to, he later on finds out that he is an author. Jamal convinced William to come out of his apartment and face the real world and show him that it is not that bad. Another thing is the music/sound effects in this movie are really effective to the tone of the movie which makes it more enjoyable.

The main message of the film is attaining your dreams and holding onto them because in the film William is helping Jamal with his career and he shows him to not give up on the world before it gives up on him because that is what William did and he became a recluse and realized his failures but were able to get over them. The film makes me think I should hold onto any dreams I have and to not give up on the world or i’ll become a recluse like William.

How to be Single Film Review

I chose the the film "How To Be Single" because I just watched it last week and had some thoughts on it. The review I chose was "The Flick Filosopher (MarryAnn Johanso)" you can find this review at http://www.mrqe.com/external_review?review=365544520. I selected this film review because yeah they did make some pretty clear points on the movie but they didn't mention one good thing about the movie and it made me mad because they just thought about the negative things. I also looked at this persons reviews on other movies and they didn't seem to have anything good to say about a lot of movies.

I thought the movie was hilarious and a good movie for the single ladies to watch on Valentines day to have a good laugh and smile on Valentines day.  In this review they mention that there is no proper way to be single and this isn't a good movie to follow on how to be single. But like really do you think that people actually watch the movie for tips on how to be single? No. It was made for comedy to make people laugh. This review is sucking every bit of fun out of the movie. It's obviously unrealistic and if a person actually thought you should take these tips from a comedy movie then they are crazy.

I find most reviewers bring out the worst in movies. I think they do this because they are jealous or think their opinion is everything. There is many good things about "How to be Single" like I said the humour is good. Also it makes a good point on being single. You don't gotta be hung up on your ex or wanting to be in a relationship. The single life is just as good, sometimes even better and this movie shows that. This reviewer states that it was a crappy movie to put out on Valentines day but honestly I think it was a great idea because a lot more people would go see it.

Descriptive Writing

On an early February morning, my little brother Jaden and I went outside to play hockey on the outdoor rink. We step outside and see the fresh ice. I feel the cold breeze in the air, smell the crisp cool air and taste the fresh morning breeze. I hear the wind blowing and our skates tearing up the ice as we skate around. I came out here to teach my little brother how to play hockey. The sights, smells, sounds and tastes remind me of my first time on the ice.

My first time on the ice was scary yet exciting. I was excited to learn how to play the sport my family loves. I was a pretty good skater for my first time. I took a tumble a few times but everyone does on their first try. I remember shooting the puck for the very first time. I hit it my hardest and it just barely went in the net but when it did my Dad, my older brother Jansen and I jumped for joy, I had scored my first goal. It felt awesome and I was very proud of myself, and from that day on I knew I wanted to be a hockey player.

My little brother was a pretty wicked hockey player for his first time out there. He refused to wear skates for his first time because he was too scared. He got out there running along the ice just blasting shots. You wouldn’t have even known it was his first time on the ice he was so good. I ended up playing goalie and when he scored on me for the first time, the moment was amazing, he ran in to tell my parents and my family was so proud of him. He kept running around roaring “I’m going to be a hockey player!”

We stayed out on the ice pretty much all day, well at least until it got dark out. We were getting pretty exhausted. Mom came out to watch as my older brother Jansen, my dad, my little brother Jaden and I were ripping up the ice shooting pucks everywhere. We convinced mom to get out there and play too, honestly she wasn’t so good at hockey...she just liked to watch it. She was very slow and cautious because she was terrified to fall. But I will admit she did a pretty good job shooting.

It was a great day spent with family making some of the best memories. We got a great picture of my little brother and placed it in the photo book next to mine and Jansen’s pictures of our first time on the ice. I will cherish this memory forever because I was glad I got the opportunity to teach my little brother something our family loves.

Writing Reflection

I do not write during my spare time. Usually I spend my spare time watching netflix and going outdoors with my brother. My favourite writer is Nicholas Sparks because the only books I read are his. My favourite kind of writing is persuasive because I am good at convincing people to do things and in grade 9 I got a very good mark on my persuasive writing piece. Since I am good at persuading people persuasive writing comes easiest for me. I find writing essays very difficult. I get my ideas for writing from class discussions. I am currently working on a piece of writing in English class. It is a short story essay on the book To Kill A Mockingbird. A piece of writing I have written that I am proud of is a descriptive essay on my cousin Courtney. I wrote this story in grade 7 and got an A+ on it. Usually I only produce one draft copy for writing and edit it very well. I feel my strengths as a writer would be description, a few of my teachers have told me I describe things well and get right into strong detail. My biggest weakness as a writer would be sentence structure, I tend to have good ideas but I ramble on too much. If I had to choose my favourite subject to write about it would be sports related things such as hockey or soccer. My second favourite subject would be writing about my family. My goals as a writer for this semester is to become stronger in the sections of writing I am weak at such as sentence structure and to become a good writer so I can get good grades on writing pieces.
